Nerd Fuel: Bones Coffee – Electric Unicorn

Today, I’m going to talk about a coffee that I’ve had my eye on for some time. It’s another offering by Bones Coffee and it’s one of their more popular flavors; Electric Unicorn. I know some of you may be wondering just what is “electric unicorn”? It certainly doesn’t sound like a flavor most people are familiar with. Well, from working in the retail business, I can tell you that commercial branding on flavors has become quite complicated. Browsing the store shelves will reveal odd options like “unicorn”, “mermaid” and “dragon blood”. Don’t ask me where these names come from. Generally, “unicorn” indicates a flavor that is both sweet and sour, or sometimes fruity. In the case of this coffee, Electric Unicorn is defined as a fruity breakfast cereal. So, think Fruity Pebbles or Trix. I know, it sounds weird. Fruity Pebbles flavored coffee? It sounds pretty gross. But, I’m happy to tell you, it actually works quite well!

You can smell the fruity cereal aroma as soon as the coffee starts brewing. The flavoring is not very heavy and it mixes quite well with this medium roast coffee. As usual with Bones Coffee, the flavor itself is very natural. It’s not overpowering or artificial tasting. But it’s still a tough one to describe. I guess the best way to explain this flavor is this; imagine finishing a bowl of fruity cereal and then taking the remaining milk that’s in the bowl and pouring in your coffee. We’ve all turned our empty cereal bowls up at some point in our life. So you know exactly how that cereal-tainted milk tastes – well, take that flavor, mix it with your coffee and you’ve got Electric Unicorn.

It’s worth mentioning that Bones Coffee is advertising this variety as having a “new and improved” taste. I never tried Electric Unicorn before this update. So, I’m unable to compare this new blend to the previous version. All I can say is that I loved this coffee much more than I expected. So, if you’ve tried it in the past and weren’t that impressed, you may want to give it a shot today. This is one that comes highly recommended.

Score: 4 out of 4

Would buy again?: Yes. This is a unique and fantastic flavored coffee. I can imagine that it might not be for everyone. But if you’re a fan of sweet, fruity cereals, than you’ll probably really enjoy this coffee.
