Nerd Fuel: Donut Shop – Sundae Fundae Latte

It’s not that I’m a coffee snob. But I used to really shun these “gimmick” K-cups. You know, the cups with the frothing packets or the ones that don’t actually contain ground coffee. But, a few months ago I gave in and tried one of the Donut Shop cappuccino pods and the results surprised me. In fact, I liked it so much that I have tried a handful of them and even reviewed them on this site. Recently, I picked up the latest release in Donut Shop’s 1-Step Latte line – the Sundae Fundae Latte.

In case you haven’t seen my other 1-step Latte reviews, these products don’t actually contain mini filters filled with ground coffee. Instead, the pods contain a mixture of a hot cocoa style powder mixed with a dried creamer. Is there coffee in there somewhere? Maybe… probably? To be honest, I’m not really sure with this one. There was certainly no coffee aroma during the brew process. Nor is there any coffee detected when I take a good sniff of the finished product. If I’m being honest, I don’t even really taste any coffee either. Instead, what I have here seems to be some sort of glorified hot chocolate mixture with a very minor coffee-like aftertaste.

The first thing I noticed about this drink is the chocolate and confetti flavoring. It’s the front and center flavor with this cup. Thankfully, these don’t taste artificial like so many coffee pods do. In fact, they are pretty tasty when you get right down to it. But still, out of all the cheap lattes I’ve put into my K-Cup machine, this one seems to be least deserving of the name “coffee”. It’s really nothing more than dressed up hot cocoa pod.

So where does that leave us? Well, this is a really cool and fun product if hot chocolate is what you have in mind. The kids are sure to love it. But, if you’re more of a coffee aficionado, you should know what you’re getting into with this release. I’m not sure it’s deserving of the “coffee” or even the “latte” name on the front of the box. Regardless, it’s tasty.

Score: 3 out of 4

Would buy again?: Yes. Is this REAL coffee? Probably not. But is it enjoyable? Sure. If I ordered a sundae style latte from a coffee shop and they handed me this I’d be disappointed. Then again, this is isn’t coming from a coffee shop, it’s coming from a cardboard box. It is what it is. Just know what you’re in for before spending your money.
