Nerd Fuel: Starbucks – Smoked Butterscotch

Just when I thought I was running out of interesting coffees to try, I stumble across one of the most intriguing names I’ve seen in a long time. I’m talking about Smoked Butterscotch from Starbucks. Starbucks coffees are always either hit or miss for me. They are either really REALLY good, or they do absolutely nothing for me. So I’m always a little apprehensive to pay premium money for what’s not always a premium brew (at least to me). Thankfully, I have a friend who is a Starbucks connoisseur. So, when he gave the Smoked Butterscotch rave reviews, I decided to bite the bullet and try it out.

Naturally, I realized that the home product might not be a good representation of what you can get in the actual coffee house so, if I’m being honest, I wasn’t expecting much. But, my opinion started to change as soon as I smelled this thing brewing. Right from the get go, the butterscotch aroma was prevalent. Now, from my experience with flavored coffees that’s either really good or really bad… So, it was with some apprehension that I took that first sip. But, I’m please to report that this is indeed a pretty quality coffee!

The flavor is very decadent. It’s silky and smoky with a mild butterscotch flavor. Perhaps mild isn’t really the best word. The butterscotch taste is quite noticeable but it’s also not very overpowering. That sickly sweet taste that often accompanies a lot of flavored coffees isn’t present with this cup. Instead, the flavor is mellow and complimentary. It doesn’t cover the flavor of the coffee beans, it enhances it. That’s exactly what I look for when it comes to flavored coffees.

I was pleasantly surprised with this purchase and quite satisfied. This makes an excellent hot cup of joe but I can also see it being used for a tasty iced brew as well. This latest from Starbucks is highly recommended for those that enjoy flavored coffee.

Score: 4 out of 4

Would buy again?: Yes. Way better than I expected. Starbucks manages to nail the flavor of “smoked butterscotch” perfectly. I’m not sure I’ve ever had my butterscotch smoked before. But I imagine that if I did, this is exactly what it would taste like.
