Review: I’m in Love With Your Dead Grandmother

The Old Game Hermit Valentine’s Day tradition continues! In case you are unfamiliar, every year on this day, I post a review for a sexy/cute/romantic game. This year, I decided to step away from the usual genre and try something a bit different. About a month ago, I was browsing PSN and I came across a handful of releases by an independent game studio called Kimulator’s Films. After taking a moment to browse their collection, I knew I had found something a little unusual. Now, I’ve not researched this “developer” in depth. But, it appears that what we have here is a young man and woman from Canada, who enjoy producing games that are essentially nothing more than very low budget interactive movies. Since Valentine’s Day was just around the corner, I decided to purchase one of their games titled, I’m in Love with your Dead Grandmother.

Look, I’m not going to lie to you. This is game is hot garbage. But I played it. So now, you have to hear about it.

What we have here is the story of an awkward man who finds himself on a date with an equally awkward woman. While lounging on her sofa, he notices a picture of the woman’s grandmother and instantly falls in love with her. He begins to quiz his date about her grandmother while fantasizing on how he might be able to ditch his date, and go out with her grandmother instead. The only problem is, granny is dead. But that doesn’t deter our young friend…

As if the story wasn’t bad enough. The game is really nothing more than a series of videos shot on an amateur camera. Occasionally, some the actors will appear in front of a green screen with backgrounds drawn by crayon. (Yes, really). Every now and then, the player will be prompted to select an option from an on-screen menu. The option you choose will determine the path of the story (and the video that you see next). It’s similar you an old Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book. Only this time, it’s more like “Choose-You-Own-Cringe Moment”.

In fact, “cringe” the main element here. Every second of this game is cringe-inducing. I can honestly say that I’ve never played anything like it. And, if I’m being completely honest with you, I’m not sure that I ever want to again.

When I say there is no gameplay to speak of in this title, I meant it. Aside from choosing options for the occasional list, there’s no gameplay whatsoever. I know that most visual novels work the same way. But at least with those, we have branching stories and interesting outcomes. Here, it’s just one poorly produced video after another. Completely pointless.

There’s no doubt that this game, and others produced by this developer, are intended to be silly and stupid. Their very existence is a joke. I get that. Still, this game is just terrible. Even though this is intentionally produced cringe. I can’t in good faith recommend this game to anybody. There’s nothing noteworthy about it, whatsoever. Even the few laughs that it managed to get out of me, were more directed at how terrible this game was than by anything in it that was actually amusing.

I thought I was doing a good thing by venturing away from the dating sims or the hentai games this year. But I’m in Love with your Dead Grandmother was not the answer I was looking for. Trust me. No matter how amusing and silly this looks, don’t waste your time or your money on this.

Version Reviewed: PS5

Difficulty: Easy –  There’s no challenge to this whatsoever. It’s a series of cheap scenarios strung together by interactive menus.

Multiplayer:  None.

Story: This entire game is an interactive story. But a third-grader could easily craft a more engaging tale than this.

Originality: I have to admit, I’ve never played anything like this before. In fact, this might be a whole new category of gaming… Cringe Clicker.

Soundtrack: Believe it or not, this game features an original song, which as terrible as it is, is probably the best thing in the game. The majority of the game feature no music, only the voices of the actors (which are exaggerating their French-Canadian accents).

Fun: Unless you really just enjoy viewing cringe content, there’s absolutely nothing fun about this game. I went into this knowing it was going to be a bunch of amateur nonsense, but I figured I would get a laugh or two out of it. I did not.

Graphics: There’s no computer generated graphics in this title at all. It’s comprised of videos (probably shot on an iPhone). There is some basic editing and low-level special effects in some scenes. But nothing worth mentioning.

Playcontrol: No issues. The only interactivity involves selecting options from a menu and one or two “press to escape” scenes.

Downloadable Content: N/A

Mature Content: Sexual themes, Language

Value: This game sells for $4.99 on PSN. Even at such a low price, I cannot recommend this game.

Overall score (1-100): 20 – This might be the lowest score I’ve ever given a game. I gave this game 10 points because it actually starts and another 10 points because you can technically play it all the way to conclusion.
