Nerd Fuel: Green Mountain – Chocolate Dipped Pistachio

It’s been a little while since I wrote a coffee review. To be honest, the reason it’s been so long is because I haven’t come across any new coffee varieties that I’ve wanted to try. That is until I found this on my local grocery shelf; Chocolate Dipped Pistachio from Green Mountain Coffee.
It’s been quite some time since I’ve tried something new from Green Mountain. But, I love chocolate and I’m quite fond of pistachio. So, I couldn’t pass this one up.
Technically, I think this coffee was supposed to be a seasonal Spring release. But for some reason, my local grocery store neglected to put it out on time. But to me, neither chocolate or pistachio really seem to be exclusive to Spring. So I figured it wouldn’t hurt to give this a try before we shift into the Autumn season.
Like most flavored coffees, the aroma for this release is really prominent during the brew process. The nuttiness of the pistachio took front and center stage to my nose. This continued once I got it in the mug. In fact, it was almost a little too powerful for my liking. It smelled very sweet, almost like a dessert instead of a coffee.
At first taste, this nuttiness still comes through as the prominent flavor. But once it’s hit your palate, it does start to give way and blends with natural flavor of the beans. The coffee itself seems to be a medium roast – very similar to what you might find in a house blend. It has a mild chocolate finish (with a Hershey’s syrup-like quality to it). I can’t say that the flavor of this coffee is bad. But it’s more artificial than what I was hoping for.
This is one of those coffees that would get more mileage over ice with lots of cream than it would in your morning cup. I can see using this as a base for a good after dinner iced-coffee dessert.
I’m sure there’s people who would obsess over this release. But, it’s not really my sort of thing. Still, I applaud the unique combination of flavors. I’ve certainly had worse.
Score: 2 out of 4
Would buy again?: No. At the end of the day, this isn’t exactly what I was hoping for. The flavors are not bad. But they are little too strong in my opinion. When I pour a cup of flavored coffee, I want coffee with a little flavor it. Not a flavored drink that tastes a little bit like coffee.
