Site Updates: Update 2021

Due to an overwhelming amount of feedback regarding site performance, I have once again updated the visual layout for OldGameHermit.com. In the distant past, I always focused on performance over aesthetics. Now, that isn’t to say that I’ve ever been willing to suffer from an ugly-looking site. But things like page-load speed and browser compatibility have always been most important to me.

Then, about two years ago, I felt compelled to make the site a little more pleasing to the eye. I switched from a traditional blog-style layout to a more front page presented in a grid-like masonry format. This was later enhanced further with a number of visual effects and other delicious pieces of eye-candy. Sadly, as these sort of changes tend to do, they ended up impacting the performance of the page itself.

So, in attempt to correct this, I decided to go with the middle road. If you frequent the site, you’ve probably noticed the change already. Instead of presenting posts in a three-column grid, they are once again listed in a single column by date. However, this list still only shows an excerpt instead of the entire post. Also, I’ve toned down many of the visual bells and whistles to help save on loading time.

As always, I’m more than happy to hear your feedback on these changes. Feel free to let me know what you like or don’t like.
