Nerd Fuel: Cella’s Chocolate Cherry
December is here! Each year for Christmas one of my wife’s favorite gifts is a box Cella’s cherry cordials. So this year when I came across Cella’s Chocolate Cherry flavored coffee, I knew I had to get a box for her. (Naturally, I decided to dip my hand into the box and swipe a single pod for myself.)
Fair disclosure here, cherry cordials are not one of my favorite treats. In fact, I can’t say that I’m really a fan at all. So even if Cella’s managed to capture the flavor of their iconic candy in this box of coffee, chances are I might not care for it. Still, I will do my best to be impartial.
One of the first things I noticed about this coffee was the thick cherry aroma. Once it was in my cup, I took a good sniff and found the scent to be similar to other cherry-flavored beverages like Dr. Pepper or Cherry Coke. This led me to expect a thick syrupy taste. But I was surprised to find that the flavor is actually quite balanced.
The coffee itself is a medium roast. And both the chocolate and cherry flavors are very pronounced. But, it is not at all overpowering. In fact, I found this to be quite a pleasant coffee! This brew is a bit sweeter than what I crave first thing in the morning. But it would make for a fantastic dessert or iced coffee.
Chocolate cherry fanatics are sure to fall in love with this one. It was even good enough to impress me – someone who’s not a big cherry guy. So if you’re the type of person that looks forward to the holiday season so that you can get your hands on a box of Cella’s, you can’t go wrong with some of this coffee.
Score: 4 out of 4
Would buy again?: Yes! Surprisingly good. Rich, balanced flavor without a fake aftertaste. Smooth, enjoyable brew.
